It’s Christmas time once again. I was fortunate to have some time to capture Columbia’s 33rd Annual Christmas Parade. The historic West 7th Street and the 40 foot Christmas Tree in front of the courthouse provides the perfect backdrop for a Christmas parade. Even though it was a cold night, the streets were lined with people of all ages along West 7th street and around the square. The Christmas spirit was alive and well. I tend to forget about the cold once I get into the zone. The adrenaline starts flowing and the only thing I think about is getting the shot. The pictures will tell the story better than I can. I hope you enjoy this series of images.
I hope my images have given you a good glimpse into the Columbia Christmas Parade. I always have a fun time shooting this event. Parades remind me of my marching band days. I’ve marched in many parades back in my day with my middle school and high school marching bands. I’ve also marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. Good times! While I’m partial to the marching bands, I enjoyed the floats, too. These floats were very creative and you can see the hard work put into them. I will admit that it’s much harder shooting a night parade. Freezing action at night is a constant battle between shutter speed and image quality. A flash can help, but you run the risk of ruining the illumination from the Christmas lights. The only place flash might be effective is capturing people who are not on floats.
